THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA is an east Asian country, the third largest in the world in terms of its area (9.6 million square km) , and is situated on the western shore of the Pacific Ocean. Its coastline is extensive - around 18,000 km, and its consequently large sea surface has around 5,000 islands, of which Taiwan and Hainan are the best known.
